Situational picture of the cultural heritage of running waters - from the Ice Age to the present day
The situational picture of the cultural heritage of running waters provides a concise and comprehensive presentation of human activity in lotic environments, characterised by flowing water, and the cultural heritage created by that activity, from the post-ice age period of approximately 11,000 years. National cultural heritage registers and geographic datasets have been used in the study that deals with a long period of time. The situational picture focuses on archaeological heritage and built heritage, but also landscapes and intangible cultural heritage.
The publication is divided into three sections by topic. The first part presents the natural development of running waters and reviews human activity in lotic environments in different eras. The second part first presents cultural heritage datasets, and describes how the cultural heritage of lotic environments has been identified from the datasets. Moreover, this section examines the cultural heritage of running waters in more detail through eight compiling themes. The last part of the publication consists of short reviews of the cultural heritage of running waters, focusing on various datasets and water bodies. There is a review Oulujoen vesistöstä vesivoiman kulttuuriympäristö (p 159-165) concerning The River Oulujoki watercourse.
