History

Katerma is the upper power plant of the waterway called the Sotkamo Route. It is located on the River Ontojoki in Kuhmo municipality. Kajaani Oy (Kajaani Power Company) built the power plant between 1945 and 1950. It is now owned by UPM Energy.

The functionalist power house was designed by Architect Eino Pitkänen. The building has a concrete frame and plastered brick cladding. The power plant was refurbished in 2001. Katerma has a maximum capacity of 10 MW. The power house was built for two sets of machinery but currently only has one. The headrace was built of large concrete slabs and wooden elements.[1]
