History

Electricity produced in hydropower plants on the Oulujoki had to be transferred to other parts of the country. Biggest need for electricity was in the big cities of Southern Finland. It was Imatran Voima Oy´s (Imatra Power Company) task to build a transfer grid from the River Oulujoki to Southern Finland. This was a large scale venture. Pikkarala transfer station is an integral part of this entity. [1]

It was built between 1955 and 1959 and designed by Aarne Ervi. The station has a control building, transformer substation and transfer building built with brick facades. The area also has a wooden single family house.[2]
